Know the Enemy: Define Stress

Stress is a bitch. We don’t want her in our lives, however to define her is a smart idea as she can play a necessary role. 

But without some degree of stress, we'd probably never get up in the morning.

And would you really want to be flying on an airplane with a pilot who was totally relaxed and chilled out?

It's when stress hits those higher levels and stays there, that it becomes a bitch, she's a complicated lady and likes to play rough.

It's a smart move to take a good look at your enemy so let's get to know her better.

To define stress most easily is to split it into four types; so, let's say that relaxation is our first type, one which we could think of as the absence of stress.

Level 1: Relaxation

This is how we feel during meditation or under hypnosis, think of the times when you were totally chilled out, so contented and calm that nothing could faze you.

A state of relaxation where stress is absent; it’s a great place to visit, but we wouldn’t want to live there all the time, we’d  not get much done.


Level 2: Eustress

The next level of stress is 'Eustress,' stress’s nicer little sister also known as euphoric or dynamic stress.

This is the good stress that we all need and that lets us know we are alive. It's the heady excitement that comes from watching a scary movie, taking a roller coaster ride or snow-boarding down a mountain. It stimulates us to achieve our goals, meet the deadlines, step up to the challenge.

When channeled in a healthy way it provides the energy that drives us; if we progress at a measured pace it will enable us to recognise and make the most of whatever opportunities come our way. 


Level 3: Acute Stress

This is where stress that was beneficial is suddenly ranked up a notch, gone from a gentle push in the right direction to

a kick in the shins with a pair of pointy shoes!

This can be an uncomfortable and frenetic place to be.

But this type of stress can be useful too, it can provide that something extra you need.

Look at this way,  you might think you are exhausted but if someone shouts FIRE, you will find the extra energy needed to dash down the fire escape!

If you spend time at this level then be sure to take the time to recover afterwards.

The trick is to recognise when you're there and not to stay too long because it’s a slippery slope to chronic Stress.


Level 4: Chronic Stress

Chronic stress is what I’m talking about when I define  Stress as a bitch...this is where all benefits disappear.

Both body and mind become over stimulated and the fight or flight reaction doesn’t get turned off.

You might find yourself here through tragedy, a life changing event such as loss of job or relationship, or you may find your way here through natural life-style developments, maybe your job is high pressure or you are accumulating debt with no prospect of paying it off. 

This is not a good place to be, and the many articles, tips, strategies and hypnosis downloads are designed to help you get out and stay out.
