Stress and Skin conditions, one uncomfortable combination

Stress is a Bitch

she can trigger and exacerbate skin conditions like hives, acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, premature aging as well as viruses such as warts and cold sores.

Smart girls know how nasty these conditions are, not only can they be uncomfortable, itchy, burning and sore but they compromise our well being in other ways.


  •  Physical appearance: especially in areas not easily camouflaged like our face, neck or hands. Whether it’s the redness of rosacea and hives, the scaly signs of psoriasis and eczema, the unsightly angry break out of adult acne.... it can be hard to smile.
  • Emotional well-being: skin flare-ups encourage feelings of   depression, helplessness and lack of control. Not surprisingly this can lower our self-confidence and destroy our self-esteem; all bad!
  •  Behaviour: flare-ups can cause us to withdraw from life as we fear the reaction of others. Consequently, we csn isolate ourselves in an unhealthy way, seeing less of our friends or avoiding work or college.       

 


It doesn't take a genius to see how all this locks us into a cruel downward cycle of cause and effect, mind and body. Stress gets worse, exacerbating the skin condition and soon that is all you can see, more distress leading to more itchy blotches!

Smart girls know the importance of our skin, not only as our canvas and protective barrier.... but simply as our largest organ, attatched to all our other physiology, with a direct connection to our mind and emotions.

Is it any wonder our skin should be so affected?

excess pressure and emotional discomfort are not the only culprit when it comes to skin conditions, there are  many factors both genetic and environmental.  But she does create physical consequences in our bodies.

So how can she affect our skin, let me count the ways?      

  • Hormones can thicken hair follicle cells and increase oil production, a perfect recipe for adult acne and other related skin conditions.
  • Naturally occurring chemicals called neuropeptides can leave our skin red and itchy leading to a cycle of itching and scratching which again results in greater damage to the skin
  • These chemicals can encourage the skin's natural defences, the T cells to over react for no apparent reason, resulting in skin allergies such as hives. Or by causing the skin to 'turn over' too quickly, producing uncomfortable and unsightly flakes and scales.
  • Under pressure we may neglect ourselves, diet, exercise, sleep and skin care.
  • Cortisol can break down collagen and causes inflammation; it also adds to early onset of those fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Under stress, blood vessels may become more reactive, either clamping shut so we look pale or sallow or opening too widely causing increased blood flow and redness in conditions such as rosacea
  • suppression of our immune system make us more susceptible to skin related viruses such as herpes, cold sores and warts.
  • Stress has negative effect on the skin's function as a barrier; loss of water  means the vital repair mechanisms are compromised so the symptoms can persist for longer.

Although not true of everybody, some are just physiologically hardwired so their emotional states are more likely to trigger skin problems.

The brighter side of this sad truth is that these girls are more likely to find psychological techniques go a long way to improving their skin. 

Let's face it, if we are susceptible to emotion related skin issues it’s a no brainer, we need to get on top of it…And If stress triggers and worsens skin conditions, then relieving pressure on our body and mind is clearly a smart idea!

Learn to Relax
